Job Summary

Your job will be to create science and technology educational experiences to help students develop creative, technical and personal skills through hands-on interest-lead learning.

Your job will be to develop coding, AI and machine learning programs, workshops and activities for use in schools, science centres, libraries, makerspaces and other settings. These will be hands-on, with the learners using real tools such as manipulating actual machine learning models. They will collect, organize and classify data, choose and tune machine learning models, and fine tune the outputs.

You will work on site with your team at one of our two locations: Ryerson Science Discovery Zone 44 Gerrard st east, Toronto and/or Maker Bean Cafe 1052 Bloor St W, Toronto. Occasionally, you will work at other locations to test or deliver educational experiences.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Collaborate with STEAMLabs staff to document and develop science and technology educational experiences
  • Test educational experiences with youth
  • Complete other operational tasks that relate to your role (e.g. organization and sourcing materials)

You will work in teams as one of 3 different specialties to design and prototype hands-on AI educational experiences:

  • Machine Learning coding
  • Electronics
  • Digital design and fabrication

Here’s an example program that we will be developing. Kids will be given a physical “Superhero Generator” box with sci-fi details like bubbling neon tubes. On a laptop, they will be given example code that will generate superhero portraits and origin stories. Challenges will appear on the screen to tackle specific emergencies by modifying the code and data to generate heroes with specific powers capable of handling the emergency. The box will print a set of “baseball cards” with everyone’s superheroes to take home.

In this way, the kids will have learned the basic steps that a data scientist would take to train, optimize and make use of a machine learning model. We will also facilitate discussions about bias built into the models and show them how they need to look under the hood of AI to uncover these biases and speak up about them.

The machine learning coding team member will develop the python code and organise the data needed to train the model.

The digital design and fabrication specialist will design and 3D print / laser cut the physical box that houses the printer and sci-fi gadgetry. You will have access to 3D printers, laser cutters and other tools.

The electronics team member will build in the LEDs, buttons and other electronics and code the Arduino or Raspberry Pi controller.
