TOOL TRAINING

Weeks

Mentors:

A one stop certification for using the fleet of 3D Printrbots.

3D printing is one of a handful of tools in our Digital Fabrication tool belt. It is a perfect tool for rapid prototyping, bespoke digital fabrication, and replacing that board game piece the dog ate that time. 3D printers use additive technology to produce small objects from plastic filament that is melted down and extruded by the printer nozzle. This is a 2 hour long class on how to use our 3D printers. These printers can make forms up to 5×5 inches big, printed out of PLA plastic. You don’t need any previous knowledge to take this class.

In this workshop you will:

  • learn how to use intuitive 3D software (TinkerCad) to produce basic 3D objects
  • learn the basics of 3D printing and become familiar with 3D Printrbots
  • be certified to use our 3D Printrbots (PLA & ABS printers)
  • complete a small 3D print of your own (this depends on the size of your print, and you might have to pick it up another day)

A one stop certification for using the laser cutter.

Laser cutting machines use laser beams (!!) to cut and etch digital designs in to flat objects like paper, cardboard, plastic, plywood, fabrics and even food. The laser is super fine and super precise – making it a perfect tool for signage, jewelry, satellites and more. This is a 1 hour class on how to use our Epilog laser cutter, and doubles as a certification so that you will be able to use out machine independently. The bed is 3 x 4 feet and can cut plastic, paper, leather, and up to 3/8th wood. This machine can’t cut any plastics that contain chlorine (polycarbonate, lexan, vinyl).

In this workshop you will:

  • Become certified on our specific laser cutter so that you are able to cut independently
  • Learn how to export a vector file to the laser cutter
  • Learn how to manipulate the settings for your desired material and design
  • Learn how to troubleshoot common problems
  • Learn how the laser cutter works and it’s different components
  • Cut a basic design on your own

A one stop certification for using the CNC Router.

The CNC Router is a cutting machine that uses digital files to create physical objects. Our CNC Router has a 4 x 8 foot bed, and can cut wood, foam, and some plastics.

In this workshop you will:

  • learn how to use V-Carve Pro to output your file(s)
  • learn how to operate the CNC machine safely
  • have a better understanding of CNC milling and it’s applications
  • in a follow up session (which you will book with the staff member at the training), we will supervise your first cut and ensure that all procedures are followed

A workshop 2D digital design.

Vectors are the digital illustration file type that many Digital Fabrication machines require – including CNC routers, laser cutters and vinyl cutters. Vectors are also very frequently used in digital illustration, and almost always in graphic design. This workshop will show you how to create and manipulate your own vector images, scale them, and export them for laser cutting. If you’re looking for creative freedom for your CNC laser or router projects, we recommend this course. We have a limited number of laptops with Inkscape previously downloaded, or you can bring your own laptop and download Inkscape in advance. We recommend the latter if you’re hoping to continue your designs at home.

In this workshop you will:

  • Learn now to make and manipulate vector files in inkscape
  • Learn how this relates to Digital Fabrication, specifically for our machines
  • Learn how to turn a pre-created image (jpg) in to a vector
  • Learn how to export the vector file for use on our laser cutter
