Minecraft Meets Social
Unlike playing from home, our Minecraft sessions are a real-life social experience while playing a digital game. Activities online are collaborative and dependent on interactions and encouragement offline between players.
Our mentors encourage players to learn from each other when a challenge or knowledge gap emerges. Our staff are fluent in Minecraft – but defer to peer learning wherever appropriate.
Our mentors don’t force any particular structure or theme for the class – we follow the interests of participants, and use this as a point of departure for learning skills that would be challenging to learn on your own.
Personalized Goal Setting Agreement
We also offer the option where guardians and participants can work on a Learning Agreement together with our mentors. This is an agreement between you and your child that will help them identify what interests them, what they’d like to achieve, a structure for tracking their progress, and a sense of accountability to themselves (with your support!) All you need to do is come in to 15 minutes early to work on these together with the help of a mentor.
Parents are sometimes hesitant to allow their younger kids to interact with others online. It’s a big world out there, and it’s not all well behaved. Our supervised program eases kids into the online world, and how to be a responsible social player on the internet.
Minecraft Pro Multi-Week Program
Take your Minecraft skills up a notch at the STEAMLabs Minecraft Pro Club! Participants use their considerable enthusiasm for Minecraft to extend their creative, collaborative, and problem solving skills. The learning is kid-driven, with projects defined by the kids as a group. Parents are encouraged to attend on the final class of each round for the showcase of everything they’ve made.
Note that the format has changed – this is no longer offered as a drop-in, it is now a multi-week program so that we can manage the progress arc of the participant projects.
Over the course of this multi-week program, participants can learn to:
- – Install Mods
- – Set up a Minecraft Server
- – Create Redstone circuits and contraptions
- – Create their own mods with MCEdit and the Java programming language
- – 3D printing objects designed in Minecraft
- – Laser cutting objects designed in Minecraft
- – Computercraft – programmable computers within Minecraft
- – WorldEdit – commands to create complex structures
- – Citizens – add NPCs and program them to talk and interact with players
