Maker Intro Workshops

Curious about our kids programs? Not sure if they’re right for your kid?

 

This is an introductory workshop that is perfect for beginners and those interested in our programs to come and try out STEAMLabs & meet mentors.

 

Kids will design a capture device with motors, wood and other supplies and attach them to remote controlled robot bodies. Make a claw, a net, a scoop or whatever is best for your target prey!

Inventioneering

Do you often dream up ideas and inventions – but rarely ever get the chance to bring them to life?

 

Using a combination of high tech tools (3D printing, laser cutting, electronics), wood working and craft, we provide the mentorship and structure to help you turn your sketched ideas into working prototypes – led by your own interests, imagination and ingenuity.

Arduino Robotics

In this 7-week program you will learn the basics of robotics, electronics, coding & construction, through the design and construction of your very own robot.

 

Using Arduino (robot “brains”), electronic components, web programming (HTML & CSS), 3D printing and craft supplies, you’ll go home with an applied understanding of how real-life robots work and what is involved in bringing them to life.

Video Game Programming using Scratch

In our video game programming class, kids will use Scratch software to create their own playable games. This software, developed by MIT, encourages creative and logical thinking and teaches real programming concepts.

Coding Video Games in 3D using Unity

In this 8 week program, kids will design and program their very own 3D games using Unity. This professional development platform is used for games and apps such as Pokemon Go and many others. Previous participants have made games such as 3D first-person Pac Man & Capture the Flag.

Coding & Comics

Over the course of 7 weeks, kids will have the opportunity to storyboard their very own narrative on paper and then use a computer to make it come to life. Participants will use Pixlr, a beginner-friendly paint tool for making creative 2D assets, and Mozilla Thimble to code in HTML & CSS.

By the end of the program, each kid will have an original online comic strip that they can share with their family and friends.

 

Participants will learn how to:

  • Write compelling stories
  • Plan and design story boards
  • Draw 2D characters and scenes using Pixlr
  • Code in HTML & CSS using Mozilla Thimble

Minecraft Pro

Minecraft Pro For Kids uses your child’s already established enthusiasm to extend their creative, collaborative, and problem solving skills. Participants will work alongside mentors to design worlds, build projects and undertake missions.

  • Computercraft – programmable computers within Minecraft
  • WorldEdit – commands to create complex structures
  • Citizens – add NPCs and program them to talk and interact with players
